Well, it has been 13 days since Ann fell in the garage and hit her head on the concrete floor. It was about 11 am, Sat. Nov. 4, and we were all packed ready to get into the car to drive down to visit with Katie and Conor. Ann was standing by the door into the garage when I said I was going to get a coat to take. I went out of the room to the hall closet and began searching for the coat I wanted to take. When I went into the kitchen Ann was not there. We were planning to take Aspen with us, so I put her on a lease and opened the door into the garage. There Ann was lying on her back facing the door. She looked dead. I yelled "Ann, what did you do" and patted her face. She started blinking. I asked her if she hit her head. Ann said she thought so and started to get up. At that point she seemed okay, so I helpped her get up and back into the family room ... all while she is saying she was okay and we should continue on our trip. I said no way. Then I called Dr. Janice who agreed that I should take Ann to the Wilmington ER right away.
Ann chatted with me as we drove to the hospital. I parked outside the ER and went inside to get a wheelchair. Ann was starting to get out of the car and I made her get into the wheelchair. Dr. Janice had called ahead, so the admitting nurses were ready for Ann and we were soon in an examination room. Ann during this time continued chatting to all who would listen. Nurse and doctor examination showed no outward injury to Ann's head, so a CT Scan was ordered. Ann chatted with the machine operators who did that scan. When we returned to the exam room we started watching the Penn State game on TV and Ann and I commented to each other when Joe P. the Penn State Coach got injured on the sideline.
Doctor came in and said the scan showed multiple blood spots on and in Ann's brain. It was clear some were in the area of where she hit her head. But there was blood also in other areas of her brain. We debated wheter the fall caused the bleeding or bleading caused the fall and more bleeding. The doctor ordered another scan with dye to get a clear picture of where the blood was. He said the options were to send Ann to Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia or to Christiana Care. He said a decision would be made based on the results of the second scan as to whether or not Ann had suffered a brain aneurysm. By this time, Byron, who had been running in an "Old Timers" race came to the hospital. He talked to Ann and decided to go home to get a shower and take care of the pups. I had called Katier earlier to tell her we were not on our way. She started up to Delaware from her home in Maryland. When we learned that the scans showed Ann did not have an aneurysm, transport was ordered to take Ann to Christiana ER. I said goodbye and have a safe ride.
Druring my drive down to the hospital I kept hoping all was all right, since Ann seemed to be okay. But it was not to be. When I arrived at the Christiana ER Ann was already in an ER exam room and she was not communicating at all and was very sleepy. By now it was after 7 pm. Byron, Katie and Conor arrived to keep me comany and watch over Ann. Ann was taken for another CT Scan. She was seen by several ER doctors. Byron, who was himself was not feeling well, went home and then around 1 am Conor went to our house. Katie and I continued the wait with Ann for an ICU room to open. Finally we got up to 2A12 around 2:30 a.m. Ann was in bed and hooked up. Katie and I talked to the nurses and went home around 3:30 Sunday morning When we left Ann had not resumed communicating and was sleeping.
I returned around 11 Sunday, followed by Katie, Byron and Conor. Ann was awake and communicating. We spent the day with her talking to various doctors and nurses. It was determined that there was no need for surgeons. We would just need to wait for the blood to be absorbed. We all went home Sunday night thinking Ann was okay.
Monday morning I found Ann to be again in deep sleep and not communicating with anybody.

Still Catching up ...
It has been a while since the 4th of July. Labor Day is long past and Thanksgiving is about one month away....Christmas is less than two months. Wow time sure does fly the older we get. Let's see what has happened since the time took flight. The last post was really written several weeks ago. The update now is that Ann got her cast off after 8 weeks of riding a wheelchair. She is now using a walker for long distances and just suffling along holding on to whatever she can for short distance walks. I am still sleeping with her in our first floor "motel" room. I tried to move back upstairs and use the kiddie monitors to monitor Ann's snoring on the first floor. But after two nights back in my good bed, Ann woke me at 4 AM and by the time I got downstairs I found her sitting in her wheelchair with a bloody face. She said she had gone to the potty and was attempting to get back in bed when she fell into the parked wheelchair cutting her brow above her right eye. At first I thought she may have damaged her eye, but once the blood was wiped away it was a small cut not reqiring stictches. But a very black eye was the result. Looked like I had struck her. So, I am again sleeping downstairs so I can be of assistance during the night to her.
Cedar went to have her second operation on Friday Oct. 13. Vets shaved her, put her to sleep and began operating when the heart monitor started to beep funny. So, they closed up the incision and worke her up. Turned her over to the heart specialist and his tests show that she had a small leak in her heart valve. The doctors put her on a beta blocker like I use to take and had her rest up for a week. Last Friday they operated again .... this time without the heart giving any problems. Dr. removed the high tech stuff he had inserted in Cedar's left knee earlier in the year (since the knee never complely healed. He also operated on her right knee to releive some the swelling there. Cedar has been home a week and is well on the path to recovery. She is putting weight on all four legs and wants to run and climb steps on her own even as we try to keep her from doing so. Swelling is down and while she lost her appitie while on a med, it returned this morning and she cleaned up her bowl and looked for more. I think Wilson had a major cat fight this morning. Heard lots of very LOUD cat screams in the back woods sortly after he went out after breakfast. I called for him and he came from the area of woods where the fight sounds had come from. I saw know damage except a bit of blood at corner of his right eye. Anyway, I brought him inside and he has remained sleeping most of the day.
Byron drove down yesterday to VT to watch VT wip Clemson in a Thurday night football game. He made it back home by 12:30 this afternoon. Ann and I watched the game on Byron's HD TV. Real nice sound and view. Byron is now up from his nap and off to go down to Mollie's for the night.
Just before the game started I got a call from nephew David who informed me that my sister, Judy, was going into emergency surgery for a lumb jutting out of her stomach. They thought it was another hernia, but found that the mesh they that had been inserted during heria operations earlier this year has moved and was cutting into her intestine. Surgeon up at Bloomsberg Hospital told David it was the worst mess had had ever seen, since she had not had a chance to clean herself out before the operation. And there is so much scare tissue from previous operations. Fran called this morning and to say Judy was in intensive care unit doing well. I told Ann, if she is up to it, we will make the trip up to Bloomsberg sometime next week to visit Judy in the hospital. I know Mother would be pleased that I do that.
I went out the week before last and purchased one of the new alumium Nano Ipods and a wristband to carry it while I exercise. I really like walking and working out to the music. And I also purchased the Nike/Apple accessory that allows me to monitor me workout on the Ipod while using a transmitter that I attach to me shoe. It is neat.
Talk about neat. I stopped up at the new Tweeter store yesterday afternoon to scope out some better headphones to use with the Nano. Wow the new store is really nice. Different rooms are set up so you can see how all the new high tech stuff fits in and works (large tv wall screens that hide behind artwork that raises. Also a home theater reclining chair that is in sync with move music.
They had me sit in the chair to watch a plane crash segment of The Aviator movie. Wow the chair tilted as the plane rolled and it bumped and went up and down during the crash on screen. Very neat and very expensive. I have to go back next week since they were out of the headphone that I wanted to see.
Well that is it for now. All caught up.

Catching up ..... or down
The unofficial summer is over with the passing of Labor Day. Yellow school buses are back on the roads, leaves are starting to fall (or rather blow down in the wind and rain from recent storms). I am still not employeed. None of the jobs I have applied for have come my way.
BIG News is that Ann had a series of seizures (the first while in Maine on a week's vacation with Katie and Becky at the start of August). The Sunday (Aug. 6) after she retuned home, she had another one, so I called 911 and ambulanced her to Wilmington Hospital ER for a six hour stay. The following evening (Monday) I think she had another while going to the bathroom. Anyway, she fell with a really big THUMP and I found her on the floor wedged between the wall and toilet. She said she did not hit her head but did hurt her foot. Byon and I got her up and into bed with ice on her swollen left foot. A trip to Dr. Janice's office (she was on vacation) led us to get the foot x-rayed and then visit Delaware Ortho and Dr. Damian Andrisani who confirmed that Ann had broken the three bones in the top of her left foot. Ann picked purple for the color of her foot to mid calf cast. (Ann told Dr. A how she knew his mother and sister from years ago when Katie was in Brownies with them).
Knowing Ann's failure at using a cane in the past we forewent crutches in favor of a wheelchair. Byron built ramps into the front door and down the step from the Kitchen to the family room. After two or three nights with Ann on the family room couch and me sleeping in my recliner, Katie came up for a day and together with Byron and me, we moved my office upstairs to the guest room and put two twin beds in the office with a potty chair for Ann. Meanwhile, the same day Ann got her cast we saw Dr. Edelshon who started her on a new med to control her seizures better. So, the past four weeks have been rather routine for Ann, wheelchairing from room to room with Byron and me helping her up and down the ramps.
We have been getting out with the wheelchair .... dinner at Appleby's (Laura treated us to a very sweet dessert) and Hollywood Diner at Fairfax .... to various doctor's appointments .... and to Philadelphia with Byron and Mollie to see Lion King on Aug. 19, and to Joy Dara's weding to Cory Todd on Sunday, Sept. 3. Ann has done very well on these outings and we have had a good time. We both enjoyed Lion King and were impressed with the arrangements the Academy of Music on Broad Street made for us (space for Ann's wheelchair at the back of lower level with a chair next to it for me). Joy was a beautiful bride at the tradional Jewish wedding held at the Hotel duPont. Again, the hotel staff made it easy for us by helping us get from level to level via special elevators and allowing us to use the women's rest room.
Got to go make dinner .... more some day in the future.

July Saturday - post 4th
It is a slow July Saturday after all the noise of the 4th. Byron has the pups Cedar and Aspen playing at a park. I just returned from taking Charcoal huffing and puffing on a slow walk of about a mile ( up to the light at Silverside and back. She still loves to walk but it is somewhat of a struggle for the old pup. But when we make the turn to return home, Charcoal true to habit takes the lead into her mouth and walks herself home. Now is she laying at my feet still huffing and puffing.
It is good having Aspen Marcom back from "summer camp with Lexie". She is so full of energy compared to Cedar who is still on the mend from her knee operation. Cedar is doing better, but is still now walking well on her bum leg. Byron and I are taking her for half mile + walks and are able to get her to keep her leg donw about half the way....hopping the other half. Also Byron purchased a pool for the pubs to exercise in. He has it set up in the woods and like to splash around. He leads Cedar around in circles so she uses the bad leg more. We take her back to the Vet next Tuesday at 1:30.
Ann has completed PT and now has an electronic treatment for her feet and legs that we can do at home. She says her legs and feet feel better after being treated 30 minutes. I just set up for this afternoon's treatment of a half hour for each leg/foot.
We are trying to talk US Airways into refunding or extending the ticket she could not use a year ago when she had her third brain operation (removal of blood that had pooled on her brain). Afterwaiting 38 minutes on hold last evening, I made contact with a Steve in the airline's accounting department who promised to go to bat for us and get an extention voucher minus $100 service fee. Let's see if he confirms that next week.
I spent several days talking and emailing a Colorado based firm that offers placement services similar to what I signed up to do with BH here two years ago. James was a good salesman and I enjoyed chatting with him on the phone, but once he disclosed the cost of $6,500 plus I told him I could not make that investment at this time. Good service for a young to middle age man looking to get a new job anywere, but the services would not just focus on the Wilmington area. So, I am on my own to continue the job search. . . . .

My Son Is Coming Home
Well, it has been a long run for Byron at the trial in SF. He departed for the West Coast mid January and is returning home post trial mid June. His three weekend visits home amounted to a total of less than 120 hours (much of which was jet lag). So it will indeed be good to have my Son home again for a couple of months until his next out of town trial or whatever. It has been a long while since I last posted here. So, here is a quick update.
Well I have been using my Olympus E-500 with much enjoyment taking photos of the puppies, family members and whatnot. Really enjoy being back at PMRI working out Monday through Friday. It is just a six mile drive to Pellport on Delaware 52 and most of the folk who work there are still there, so it has been like returning home. I do six plus miles five days a week using two bikes, treadmill and elipical (sp). Also do 66 to 99 crunches most days and have started back doing about half the weights three times a week (except when my neck is stiff or since I went on blood thiner). Yes, I had a couple A-fib episodes while on the equipment, so Dr. Goldenberg put me on a heart monitor for three weeks and after seeing one or two racing heart reports from the monitor, he had be start taking a blood thinner and another pill to keep my heart at a steady beat. The blood thinner requires I get my blood tested every week for level of warafin in it.
Ann continues at Delaware Curative Workshop for PT after having several falls earlier in the year. She had a visiting nurse come to the house for about three weeks before starting at DCW.
I got her a cane which she barely uses and the nurse had her get a handicap top for our bathroom toilet. It has arms and a higher seat that makes it easieer for Ann at night. It was during night visits to the bathroom that she had her falls that resulted in Dr. Janis reevaluating her need for PT. We also started seeing a Nurologist to keep track of Ann's progress. Katie and Byron were able to talk Ann into agreeing to sell the Accord. Byron mad arrangements for Jeff to promote and sell the car. Jeff did a great job putting up on-line ads with lots of photos he took. he took his wife, Deb, to Flordia for a week, so we should know more about the status of the car sale when he returns.
Cedar, Byron's pup, developed a limp in her left rear leg that caused us to visit Dr. Hardy at Brandywine Hundred Vet for x-rays and some meds. After a month with no improvement I got Hardy to refere us to Dr. Jankowski who is a ortho specialist and he operated on Cedear to replace torn lig. That was two weeks ago and Cedar continues to recover slowly by well. Meantime, while Byron was home the other weekend to visit Cedar he discovered that Charcoal has a new growth on her paw. I took her to the Vet the other day and Dr. Hardy gave me a $1,200 cost estimate to remove a bunch of lumps and clean her teeth. I have put off doing that until Cedar has time to heal some more. While all this has been going on, we shipped Aspen down to Katie's for a visit with Lexie. it was one of Byron's great ideas and has allowed Cedar the peace and quited needed to mend.
The job hunt is goes one, with little to show for it but hours of searhing job sites on the Internet and several forwarding of my resume to ChristianaCare, AAAMid-Atlantic, and a couple of other
organizations with job openings. Spoke with the HR person at Christiana Care but got the impression that I was condidred to qualified and old for the marketing position that was open. No call back for interview. Have also not heard back from Triple AAA reference its marekting psoition. There was a good PR Director spot at a hospital in NJ and also at Beebe Hospital in Lewes, but travel is out of the question.
Spoke to Adam Ellick the other evening and learned that things are going well for him. He is now full-time at the NY Times working in new Video News department. He is planning to return to Indonesia during July with one of the Times editors and a director to film a documentry. Lynne is doing okay. I talked with her for her birthday yesterday. Also talked to Norman earlier this week and will be having lunch with him in a week or so. Richard Robthwell has retired from RT&E. Aly Irsh left RT&E for job in Maryland. RT&E is hiring back some former staff -- Barry Angeny and Terry Colgan.

Rainy 4-Dog and 1-Cat Sunday
Arose this morning to the platter of heavy raindrops and muffled thunder. Poor Cedar, Aspen MarCom, Lexy, Charcoal and Mr. Wilson do not like the heavy rain and Ann, Katie and I do not like their muddy feet, so they are staying inside a good while today. I made arrangements to purchase an Olympus E-500 DSLR camera from Cameras Etc. on Monday after I go to register for exercise at Pellport. My old friend Mike will do the re-evaluation needed before I can start working out on the equpment (some of which is new since I ended my five-year workout back during the summer of 2004. It was good last week to stop in and chat with Guy, Andy and Joe. It was like I had never left (except for my pouch that now overhangs my belt). Also had check up with
diabetes doctor (actually his PA Berrie Henderson) and a lower GI by Dr. Modi. All reports were good. And I got clearance to exercise again. Still job hunting. Did make contact with a supplier I had met at PMA who I will talk to Monday about doing some consulting.

TO THE VET WE GO
Well it is Monday, March 6, and Cedar got up this morning still favoring her left back leg, so I called and got a 10 a.m. appointment at Brandywine Hundred Veterinary Hospital. Took Cedar and Charcoal, leaving in her kennel Aspen Marcom who was loudly crying (It really got to me how much the girls love each other -- they do not like to be separated!). Samantha (she is newly divorced and studying interior decorating in college) took us into Exam Room # 3 where Dr. Hardy spent a good half hour checking the pups and chatting. He gave Cedar a shot and 20 pills that I need to give her the next ten days and evenings. If the shot and pills don't appear to relieve the suspected inflamation, I will need to take Cedar back for x-rays and more treatment for whatever is discovered. Charcoal got her Lyme's booster shot and we discussed the need to have her teeth cleaned and maybe a cyst removed. Total cost for the visit to the Vet was about $236. Emailed Byron with a report and we emailed back and forth reference getting Charcoal fixed up. I will call Sam Tuesday afternoon and ask her to find out if teeth clean and cyst removal can be done while Charcoal is knocked out. Also want check about other lumps that may or may not need to be removed.
